My Journey
TO SCHOOL COUNSELING
I graduated from Tabb High in 2000 in search of a degree in Music Therapy. When I enrolled at Virginia Tech, I didn't have that option so I went with the next best thing, Music Education. I have truly loved every moment with my students.
I have taught a variety of subjects at the middle school level from reading, writing, coding and game design, choir, theater, and adaptive music for some of our most vulnerable at GMS. Regardless of the content, I believe it to be my privilege to connect with students. The more I teach, the more I learn.
In the fall of 2019, my curiousity grew. I wanted to know more about my students and what was behind their ideas and feelings. I have always had a special connection with my students, and held onto one of my core beliefs that the best way to educate students is through fostering relationships with each individual student. Thus, I began my journey to get a Master's of Education in School Counseling.
I graduated with honors in May of 2021. I took one year to continue teaching to be sure I was prepared. It was throughout this school year, 2021-2022, that my focus in K12 schools was sharpened. I know, now, I am ready to work for kids in the role of School Counselor.
words to remember
This is a word cloud created from common language I gathered from student and parent notes and letters over the years. Relationships are the foundation of working with students and families. I know this from 15 beautiful years of experience in middle school.
